Medieval Doctors

Medieval Doctors                                                                                                  Medieval Doctors really had no idea what caused diseases. But they believed that they could cure them. There were five kinds of doctors physicians, surgeons,  barbers, apothecary, and wise women. Doctors weren’t very important until the black death came to Europe.

The Black death

The black death was also known as the plague. The plague was a desire that killed one-third of Europe’s population. It killed its victims in four days. There were odds was of ‘curing’ someone with the plague.

Cures for the plague

The most popular and well-known ‘cure’ was blood-letting. Blood letting was used believing that there was too much blood in the person. To let out the blood a barber would cut the victim and let the blood drain out. this practice was harmful and sometimes deadly. Another ‘cure’ was to put a heated cup on your back. As the cup cooled a suction that made the skin swell. This was thought to take out extra air from the body.

Different Medieval Doctors

Wise women were elderly woman who used herbs to make medicine. Barbers were regular barbers but the only thing that made them a doctor was that they performed blood-letting. Surgeons didn’t really know how to perform surgeries with sanitation. There Was no anesthetics but to drink alcohol to dull the pain.
